One of the very popular activities at Otters’ Haunt on the Vaal is canoeing among the islands. Only an hour or so drive from Johannesburg, you will find yourself winding along on a wilderness waterway. The Fish Eagle calls and you may spot vervet monkeys, otters, porcupines and many species of waterfowl.  Go quietly among the islands, and do not intrude on the wildlife, the fishermen, landowners and picnickers – the river is for everyone!

The Malachite Kingfisher

The Malachite Kingfisher

The canoe trail takes its name from one of the many waterbirds that are to be seen – the brilliant Malachite Kingfisher. Many of the islands are thickly wooded. You can paddle quietly along and may see Goliath Heron, Grey Heron, Green Backed Heron, White-Throated Cormorant, African Dater, and several other species of kingfishers includingthe Giant Kingfisher and the Pied Kingfisher. The cry of the Fish Eagle echoes over the islands and these birds can often be seen circling overhead looking for prey among the fishes below.

The boats are either 1-or 2-seaters for adults, with space for a child on the 2-seater. They are very stable and made for this river at the Fluid factory in Parys.

The islands of the Vaal are very special because they occur on the underlying geology of the Vredefort Dome. This is the world’s oldest and largest meteorite impact site, and the Dome is the central formation of the crater. The Vaal River crosses the Dome from east to west. In the course of its journey it creates hundreds of small and large islands which are a wonderful haven for wildlife. The also have an interesting history. They were used by Boer guerrillas in the Anglo-Boer War (1899-1902) to hide from British troops and carry out ambushes.

  •  We offer a guided canoe trail but also allow the sit-on top canoes to be hired.
